The Crannog of Loch Tay

The definition of a crannog has to be “artificial island, usually built in lakes, rivers and estuarine waters”. They have been variously interpreted as free-standing wooden structures, as at Loch Tay. The word “crannog” is from Old Irish and means young tree.

They were made to protect the more wealthy families of a population. Scotland has now 400 crannogs, but Ireland still holds the record with over a thousand of them. Besides being used by wealthy families, the crannogs have also served as non residential hunting and fishing stations, and holiday homes.

Now they have reconstructed a crannog on Loch Tay in Scotland, and it’s open to visitors everyday day from Easter to October. A team of archaeologists from Edinburgh University has given us a good picture of how the people lived in crannogs, so you can learn a lot by visiting it.

Speaking of floating residents, here you have the floating island of Lake Titicaca where people actually live.

Macaque Monkey Is A Photobomb

You have maybe heard about the crazy Macaque monkey that stole a photographers camera to take photos of himself. If not, here is the story: Visiting a national park in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, award-winning photographer Mr Slater left his camera unattended for a while.

Nearby a female black macaque monkey was attracted to it. She was fascinated by her reflection in the lens and somehow she started to trigger the camera which resulted in amazing portraits. These type of monkeys are very know for their intelligence, but this one surprise a lot of people.

At first we all thought the photos were fake, but they’re really not. Now suddenly this female monkey has become a photobomb on several other photos of famous photographers. It’s funny how her head peaks up everywhere. Like she has been borrowing their cameras as well. Now, monkeys are actually great posers, just check out this photo session.

Take a Look at Pac Man’s Interesting Skull

The epic old arcade game Pac Man that will never be boring, and that we all love so much. It is simply a little ball with a mouth (Pac Man) that is running through a maze trying to eat up all the pac-dots before the enemy ghosts eat him.

Well, have you ever wondered how the Pac Man’s skull looks like? Now you have the opportunity to know. Artist Le Gentil Garcon has used a lot of time to gently shape Pac Man’s skull. To make it all perfect he worked together with a paleontologist named Francois Escuille. Garcon used his knowledge he got throughout his studies of both the human and the animal skull.

The Pac Man has obviously a really interesting anatomy and some cute teeth that look like ours. The only material used is resin, and it is 65 cm in diameter. Other unreal figures that are showing their anatomy in 3D are these famous cartoon characters.

Uncomfortable and Interesting Steel Furniture

Looking at this furniture on the pictures makes you think “unique but not so comfortable”, and that is right. They are old and rusty naval mines that are found on a previous Soviet fortress on Naissaar Island in Estonia. It was sculptor Mati Karmin’s idea to take those World War II mines and use them to something useful, and what is more useful than furniture? The Estonian sculptor has literally made every furniture that you can get out of the steel mines; everything from armchairs, aquariums, cupboards, swings, fireplaces, writing desks, toilets, beds, bathtubs, etc. Karmin has a great educational background in the Estonian Academy of Art where he made sculptures out of bronze and stone.

The fireplace gives the room an edgy look and could probably be used in real life, but the chairs and the bed do not look so comfortable, but still it is interesting to see how you can take something old and rusty and turn it into something cool and useful. If you want to see more interesting and different interior, you should take a look at this underground Hill House in Switzerland.
