USS Intrepid Made Out of Lego Bricks

Nowadays people built literally everything out of Lego, and the ideas are so many. Ed “Lego Monster” Diment has built 23 feet long USS Intrepid out of Lego bricks and it is built on a scale of 1:40. The real Intrepid was very much used and also important on a lot of battles on the Pacific during the World War II.

This great piece of art can be found in Swindon in United Kingdom on the Great Western Lego Show. The other Lego piece that you see on the pictures is a 7.66 meter long container ship. The masterpiece is built by a group of school children in Germany. Lego is so popular these days that others have also used them to build several things, like for example the replica of Sleeping Beauty Castle from Disneyland.

Equality between women and men has been and still is an endless discussion. Sexism has ruled from the mid-20 century, and some people will claim that it is still to be found on several places in society. Either way you will be a bit shocked when you take a look at these vintage ads with a lot of sexism. It is true that today’s advertisements are not exactly showing equality, but they are not as rough and right-forward as these ones.

The ads represent women as stupid, weak with no opinions whatsoever. She is just there to clean the house, cook, and please and obey her husband. Today the advertisement messages are so unusual that they are almost funny to read, maybe more fun for men than for women. Other ads that are made in a vintage way for fun are these internet retro ads that are made in a 1960’s style.

Milestii Mici – World’s Biggest Wine Collection

If you are a wine lover, you should definitely keep on reading. This wine company Milestii Mici In Moldova was registered in Guinness Records in August 2005 for being the biggest wine collection in the world. It contains over 2 million bottles of wine of high quality, at least winemakers think so.

Milestii Mici is 250 kilometers long and stores a variety of old wines, the oldest from 1969, everything from “Pinot”, “Muscat” and “Riesling” to “Codru”, “Negru de Purcari” and “Auriu”. It’s open for visitors some times, and the lucky ones get a guided tour through Milestii Mici where there are rows and rows of carefully laid down wine bottles. 70% of the wines are red, 20% white and 10% dessert.

The wine collection, also called the “Golden Collection makes not just Milestii Mici proud, but also of the country and Europe. One of the wines is quite expensive, up to €480 per bottle.

Rubberbot – Robot Made Out Of Rubber

The definition of robot is “an automatically guided machine which is able to do tasks on its own, almost always due to electronically-programmed instructions”. Well, looking at these rubberbots, it is almost a fact that they can do neither. They are tiny robots made out of rubber using a laser machine and glue.

It’s pretty simple to make, but you need creativity and patience, because there are a lot of pieces to glue, and with only a few colors it can be hard to get the texture that you want. It has also a low budget, and it has its charm because it’s not fancy and technical as all the other robots that we are used to today.

They are definitely less scary than some other robots, and some of them can even remind you of “Transformers”. Another not so scary robot is this robolamp that will give your home a geeky appearance.

Newspaper and Book Sculptures in New York

The New York inspired artist Nick Georgiou from Queens has managed to use something as simple as newspapers to create art, more precisely sculptures. He finds pleasure in giving words life and transforming them into something different. The sculptures are some strange creatures but they can remind of animals like dogs. Some of them even reminds of little aliens.

He has placed most of them around in New York City, but some of his collections are for the indoors like the ones that look like paintings because of the frames. He also tears apart books to create his installations. Still both tourists and New York citizens are attracted to these little newspaper sculptures and will stop to take photos. Carpet Made Out of Flowers in Brussels

A flower lover or not, you will surely be amazed by the gigantic Flower Carpet in Brussels. The huge and colorful piece of carpet is placed in front of the City Hall, on the main square, and the makers are hundreds of experienced and enthusiastic gardeners. It was opened public on August 13^th, and was closed on the 15^th. 700,000 beautiful flowers were used to create the Flower Carpet, and it looks amazing, especially from above. It cost 3 Euros to get an above-look from one of the buildings around the City Hall.

From there you could have a beautiful panoramic view. A lot of work was put into this project, and it was worth it, because the result was incredible. The work consists of several stages and the planning starts a year in advance. This year the colors varied from pink and red to yellow and the type of flowers are begonias. Wonder what colors they will use next year.

Fossils of “Extinct” Technology

Everybody is used to see old dinosaur bones like fossils, but have you ever seen a joystick in that form? Christopher Locke wanted to show how today’s technology has improved so that “old” technology like cassettes, Nintendo and floppy disks are almost extinct. Today you can hardly find a computer that supports floppy disks, and have you seen a cassette in the music shops lately? Every piece of technology is changing so fast that it’s hard to keep updated. Every year there are thousands of new products out on the market.

We could hardly get used to the iphone 3 before the iphone 4 was produced. The fossils of Locke’s work are a symbol of how fast technology is developing. Locke made these art pieces by hand in collaboration with a local computer and electronics recycling program. He also ensures that there was no e-waste from his art work. Other of his fossil objects is the “old telephone”, cassette player and joysticks.

The Longest Bench in the World – A Place for Everyone to Take a Seat

We have all experienced the need of a bench after a long walk in the park, at the beach, or after some serious shopping, and it is ironic how it’s always occupied for some reason. But you definitely don’t have to worry about that in Littlehampton, West Sussex in Britain, because they have the longest bench in the world. It is located along Littlehampton’s promenade by the Blue Flag beach. About 300 people can sit on it at the same time, and there is no way it’s going to be occupied, there is always room for everyone.

The bench is very “flexible” and colorful, giving the promenade a joyful and young touch. It almost looks like a long rollercoaster and it is probably made with that kind of inspiration. It is 324 meters long, and is made out of hardwood bars that are put together. It was made by the design company Studio Weave, but they needed help from other organizations as well as children and other locals. Something that can remind of this is the Phonehenge that’s located near Myrtle Beach in South California

Feel Like a Termite in the “Termite Pavilion”

This beautifully created piece of art is the “Termite Pavilion”, located in London. It is the first scan of termite mounds, only that this one is in a much bigger size, so people can go inside and take a look. It is inspired by a mound found in Namibia on a festival that honors all insects, that is named Pestival. Termites are a group of insects that looks a lot like ants. They eat dead plant material in form of wood, soil and animal dung.

They can cause serious damages to crops and buildings, but they also play an important role in ecology because they recycle the dead plant material. They live in groups and the amount can be up to several millions. The Termite Pavilion gives visitors the opportunity to feel like a termite, and to understand their way of living. It is created by TERMES, a group of international experts, and Dr Rupert Soar. Something similar to termites is ants, and this is amazing paintings made out of 200,000 ants.
