Dollish little girls make photos look creepy

Ever heard about the TV-show “Toddlers and Tiaras”? Doesn’t those girls look like living dolls, that it almost becomes creepy? Well, that is exactly what the French photographer Alain Delorme wanted to capture when he shot these creepy cake photos. They are showing little girls that look fake and weird like dolls, in front of cakes, but the interesting part of the project is the atmosphere that he has made that comes so well out in the photographs.

It seems like the girls are forced to sit in front of the camera and smile. You get the same feeling now as when you watch “Toddlers and Tiaras”, because the little girls seem like they don’t want to be where they are, and that only their parents are making them do it. Delorme does a really good job capturing the moments so the right mood is managing to reach the audience and the only good thing in the pictures are the cakes. Speaking of cake, in Oakland you can find the biggest cakes ever in Cakeland.

The Longest Bench in the World – A Place for Everyone to Take a Seat

We have all experienced the need of a bench after a long walk in the park, at the beach, or after some serious shopping, and it is ironic how it’s always occupied for some reason. But you definitely don’t have to worry about that in Littlehampton, West Sussex in Britain, because they have the longest bench in the world. It is located along Littlehampton’s promenade by the Blue Flag beach. About 300 people can sit on it at the same time, and there is no way it’s going to be occupied, there is always room for everyone.

The bench is very “flexible” and colorful, giving the promenade a joyful and young touch. It almost looks like a long rollercoaster and it is probably made with that kind of inspiration. It is 324 meters long, and is made out of hardwood bars that are put together. It was made by the design company Studio Weave, but they needed help from other organizations as well as children and other locals. Something that can remind of this is the Phonehenge that’s located near Myrtle Beach in South California

Amazing Ghost-like Long Exposure Photographs

A lot of cameras have the long-exposure function that captures movement in a picture over a small period of time, and they are known as hard-to-shoot photos. But what about a three year long exposure period? A German artist and also photographer, named Michael Wesely, has found out how to make photos with that long exposure. He was really interested in the urban construction projects in Berlin in 1997, so he used a self-built unique pinhole camera to capture the development.

On one occasion he left the shutter open for 34 months. It sound unbelievable but these photographs are the outcome of the long-exposure shots he made. It gives a ghost-like appearance to the pictures, almost like they have a story to tell. In each shot you can spot how the time has passed – truly incredible. He has also done long-exposure shots of how flowers fade. More photos of Berlin but in a different way are these ones that are captured after the end of WW II.

You Would Probably Not Like To Run Into This Forest Head

At first glance these pictures can look scary showing a huge wooden head in the middle of a forest. Don’t worry, it’s just art. The so-called “Forest Head”, also known as Silvas Capitalis is to be found in Kielder Forest near the Scottish border. The head is made by an American art group named SIMPARCH, and the purpose of it is to give shelter to cyclists and others who might take long walks in that forest.

The enormous art piece is made out of timber blocks that is detailed cut, shaped and glued together, so the artists put a lot of work to it when making the huge head. They got their inspiration from “watchers” that are spiritual beings in Celtic folklore. They are supposed to watch over the forest and the people living there. Since the head is so scary, they had to test the reaction on random kids before they started accepting young visitors. Another forest that is interesting as well is this “dancing forest” in Russia.

Vintage Internet Ads

Recent years everybody is crazy about vintage and retro stuff. Everything from clothing and shoes to furniture and accessories. It has gone so far that they are now producing vintage internet ads in a 1960’s style, and it is about all the trendy sites on the web, like for example Skype, Facebook and Twitter. The best part is that the ads have such amusing illustrations showing strange but old-fashioned computers and even iPhones.

The company producing them is an ad agency named Moma in Sao Paulo. The ads are specially made for Brazil’s MaxiMidia seminar series. The ad illustrations give such optimism, like they are trying to tell you how great the social networking sites on the internet are. The contrast of the 60’s and the modern life today is a bit ironic, because back then they didn’t have internet and they were fine without, but today you can hardly find one person that is not addicted to the web, especially sites like Facebook and Youtube. Other things that are also vintage are these toys.

Insanely Detailed Origami Architecture

We have all heard about origami – the traditional Japanese folk art of paper folding. It’s super popular in Japan and it has spread around the whole world, and evolved into a modern art form. The folds in origami are basic and there are not many, but there are several forms of origami and several things you can make out of this small number of folds. One of them is origami architecture that involves using cut-out and folded paper, as thin paperboard. The three-dimensional are the hardest ones, and require skills of an architect.

These pictures are showing some of the great works of origami architecture where some of the papers are opened 360^o that involves the hardest folding. Just imagine how many prototypes had to be made before they managed to create the perfect origami building.

Today’s Gadgets Designed to Look Like They’re Made in 70s

We are living in time of great technological prosperity. Just thirty or forty years ago people were talking about the gadgets we have today in science fiction stories. That gives us enough reasons not to feel superior because we know, if this progress continues, today’s technology will be funny to future generations.

Alex Varanese is designer who tried to investigate how it would be if somehow gadgets like mobile phones, mp3 players, laptops or pocket-consoles were designed in 70s. The result is impressive collection of photos where you can see how Alex imagined all those things if they were made 40 years ago. I have to admit that there are some designs in this gallery which could be pretty attractive to some people even today. Some of those designs remind me on steampunk-like creations and we all know how steampunk is popular these days.

Salar de Uyuni – The World’s Largest Salt Flat

Salar de Uyuni is placed in southwestern Bolivia and it is the world’s largest salt flat. It covers the surface of about 10,000 square kilometers. Its white surface and bright blue sky sometimes can make incredible scenes for viewers especially during the wet season when those salt fields are covered with water, then, this place looks like a huge mirror.

According to experiences of people who have previously been there, this place can be dangerous for pedestrians who decide to challenge the desert because people can experience pretty bad visual disorientation in such white fields.

Slar de Uyuni is over 3,500 meters above the sea level, it is placed near the crest of the Andes. It is placed above the 20-meters deep lake.

Local people are telling the ancient legend about this place which says that this field was created when the Giantess Tunupa cried while breastfeeding her child after she was abandoned by her husband Kushku and this place has formed as a product of her tears mixed with her breast milk. That is why this place is also known by its other name, Salar de Tunupa.

Stalin’s Gulag Prison – The World’s Deadliest Prison of All Times

You thought that holocaust was horrible? Then, you probably should know something about the Gulag prison which was one of the worst prisons of Soviet regime. This complex of buildings can be found even today in Taga forest, in Russian Siberia.

This place is known as huge death factory which was working during the Stalin regime. The estimated number of people who were killed only in this prison is over 40 million which is almost 7 times worst than holocaust where allegedly died about 6 million people.

Most of prisoners were those who were against Stalin’s politics or those who were mistakenly considered to be the opponents of Stalin regime. The Gulag prison was closed in 1953, immediately after Stalin’s death.

Most of prisoners were convicted in poor trials where they were pronounced to be the enemies of the state and they were sent to this prison. Such ‘trials’ were also present in most of other communist countries where every man who confronted the communist regime was the enemy of the state.

Convicts were living in those poorly build wooden barracks where they waited their turn to experience the death.

Today, this almost unreachable place is cowered by vegetation which hides the horrible trails of communist regime in Soviet Russia.

Eaglehawk Neck – A Beautiful Place With Horrible History

Eaglehawk Neck was once a horrible place where prisoners were tortured and terrorized. Today, it is beautiful calm place where nature has almost erased the trails of its bad history. Eaglehawk Neck links island Tasman Peninsula to mainland Tasmania in Australia.

This island is known by tessellated pavement, rare nature phenomenon caused by erosion. The main feature of areas hit by such kind of erosion are the rocks which are fractured into regular rectangles. Eaglehawck Neck is one of the world’s most characteristic examples for such kind of erosion.

As we said earlier, during the first half of 19th century, this place hosted the prison at Port Arthur. It is famous by the so-called dog lines which were made across the neck to prevent escaping prisoners reach the sea.

The Port Atrhur prison was known as one of the most kept prisons in that time and only a few of prisoners managed to escape. One of those who managed to escape from this prison was Martin Cash who became famous by escaping twice from prison. The prison is now rearranged to be a museum and it is one of the most visited tourist locations in Australia.

The bad voice of this place has been recently renewed in 1996. when horrible mass murder happened there, however, it still remains beautiful touristic destination.
