Poly Van der Glas is an Australian silversmith, who won the Craft Victoria Fillipo Raphael Fresh Award, in 2006. She had a unique vision of utilizing human teeth and hair in making silver jewelry. Undoubtedly, her creative handcrafted pieces of jewelry won her acclaims throughout the world. Many believe that Poly Van der Glas has given the world of recycling a new perspective.
The process is undoubtedly very tedious in which firstly, teeth are collected from around Melbourne and then hair samples are collected from china and India. These are first sterilized and then hand crusted in silver to make earrings and rings. Hair is creatively painted in silver or simply artistically designed in silver chains to look appealing.
Some people find it awkward to wear pieces of stranger’s bodies like the teeth and hair as ornaments, however people agree that parts of loved ones could be accepted as tokens of affection. The fashion industry in all its eccentrics has accepted this jewelry and considered it as a new trend.

Ok, I can kind of get the hair thing, like if you had cancer and lost all your hair why not have it made into a bracelet. But the teeth? I don’t really get that. I have seen a lot of weird things, but to me, this is beyond weird or odd. And to put so much time into making them one by one by hand. Well, anyways, don’t think this will be a huge fad anytime soon unless Hershey’s sponsors it ! HA !
