The hinges just let the door open.  When closed, the doors thick edge (at the hinge) is flush against the solid stone wall and curved outwards toward the blast.  If the a blast hits the door, it is both deflected around it, as the blast pushes the door against the solid rock wall.

Take a metal bowl for example, and lay it upside down.  Pretend your hand it the blast and hit it.  If you had it flipped right side up, it would fail (and you would need stitches).

The only &quot;fail&quot; is your intellect.</description>
